State Route 99 (SR-99) is a principal north/south arterial highway extending from its southern terminus in with Interstate 5 (I-5) south of Bakersfield in Kern County across Tulare, Fresno, and Madera counties (District 6), Merced, Stanislaus, San Joaquin counties (District 10), Sacramento, Sutter, Butte counties (District 3) to its northern terminus its junction with State Route 36 in Tehama County (District 2). State Route 99 is vital to the agricultural economy of the State and Central Valley. This interregional route connects ten urbanized areas, serves major access for the movement of people and goods, and is the main farm-to-market route for most of the agricultural products from the Central Valley. SR-99 is also a major connector to all east/west routes throughout the Central Valley providing linkages between the San Francisco Bay Area and the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
In District 10, SR-99 extends 101 miles through the central areas of Merced, Stanislaus, and San Joaquin counties. It serves the communities of Merced, Livingston, Delhi, Turlock, Keyes, Ceres, Modesto, Salida, Ripon, Manteca, Stockton, and Lodi. SR-99 is important as a major lifeline route for industrial, commercial, and agricultural purposes and serves as a major commuter route within and between cities located along its length. It is also a major connector to all east/west routes throughout the Valley, providing a convenient south/north linkage for commuter and recreational traffic between the San Francisco Bay Area and the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
