Interstate 5 (I-5) is a major north/south arterial with a southern terminus San Diego County (District 11) at the International Border with Mexico, extending north through Orange County (District 12), Los Angeles County (District 7), Kern, Kings Counties (District 6), Merced, Stanilaus, San Joaquin Counties (District 10), Sacramento, Yolo, Colusa, Glenn Counties (District 3), Tehama, Shasta, Siskyou Counties (District 2) into Oregon and Washington State, and ending at the International Border with Canada.
In District 1, I-5 extends 72.4 miles north from the Mexican Border to the Orange County line/District 11 Boundary. I-5 is the principal north-south route in the densely populated coastal portion of San Diego County. I-5 serves interregional travel by linking the San Diego metropolitan area with Mexico to the south and Orange County and the Los Angeles metropolitan area to the north. I-5 is a heavily utilized commuter route providing direct access to the San Diego Central business District (CBD) as well as numerous other employment centers located within the corridor. I-5 also provides truck access to San Diego's marine terminals, rail yards, and air freight terminals for the purpose of goods movement. Since l-5 parallels the coast, it provides access to a multitude of coastal recreational opportunities as well as being a recreational gateway into Mexico.
